Pulau Komodo (The Dragon Island)

Komodo National Park has widely known with the home of the giant lizard Komodo Dragon - which has just declare to be one of the latest heritage of the world. Komodo National Park is nestled between eastern Sumbawa and western Flores lie three tiny grass-covered islands Komodo, Padar and Rinca, which together form the Komodo National Park, a protected wildlife reserve. This is the home of the giants lizard known as the "Komodo Dragon" it was thought to be a myth until the turn of the century, when fishermen who were forced by a storm to take shelter on Komodo sight the monsters. Komodo dragon is the largest lizard in the world, which called "ora" in local language. These ora can only found in their natural habitat in KNP, western and northern Flores Island. According to KNP survey in 2003, the population of Komodo dragon on Komodo and Rinca Islands is 297 dragons by direct meeting. KNP with Zoological Society of San Diego have marked about 700 dragons. Beside on Komodo Island, the dragon also could be found in Rinca, Gili Motang, and Nusa Kode Islands. The Dragons prefer inhabit at low land forest, but sometimes it also could be found at savanna and at higher forest. Adult ora prey on deer, wild pig, wild buffalo, wild horse, and dead body of that prey.
On big prey, the dragon just bite it that will die caused by infected of many deadly bacteria in their saliva. Breeding season of the dragon occurs during July to August. Female dragon can lays up to 30 eggs, which will hatch about 5 to 6 months later. The juvenile dragons mostly stay on tree (arboreal) and feed on small animals such as bird
